Picturesque Lake Barrington lies nestled in the base of the Forth River Valley approx 40 klm south of Devonport. It is an artificial Lake that was created by the building of the 84 metre high Devils Gate Dam on the Forth River for hydro-electric power production in 1969. The lake is 20 klm long.

The Lake Barrington State Recreation Area is set in 183 Hectares of the lakes forshore.Steep hillsides are cloaked by a mixture of tall eucalypt and lush rainforst trees.These trees are home to a wide variety of birds such as Tasmania's endemic yellow-throated honey-eater and the raucous & colourful yellow tailed black cockatoo. Taking shelter amongst the trees during the day are animals such as the brown bandicoot which digs for insects and worms in the soil at night, the Bennetts wallaby, pademelon and also the tiny potoroo.

A feature of the Recreation Area is an international standard rowing course with comprehensive competitor and spectator facilities. The course is used for local, interstate and international rowing, skiing and canoeing competitions.

You can go for a swim for free...or drop a line in  The Lake contains Rainbow trout...brown trout, black fish & eels. Black fish are best caught from a boat in the evenings, and the trout by trolling, spinning and fly casting.

Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park

Part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area and home to Cradle Mountain.

What’s special about Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park?

Cradle Mountain, the start of the 65-kilometre (40-mile) Overland track, is the northern end of the 161,000-hectare (397,840-acre) Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Tasmania’s highest mountain, 1,617-metre (5,305-foot) Mt Ossa, is in this park, just off the Overland Track, while another beautiful national park, the Walls of Jerusalem, abuts its eastern boundary.

The sheer magnificence of Cradle Mountain inspired Austrian-born Gustav Weindorfer to build a chalet of King Billy pine here in 1912 and work tirelessly for a decade to have the area declared a national park “for the people for all time”. His dream was realised in 1922, and today a quarter of all visitors to the state travel here to share his vision.

Take one of the many short walks through the ever-changing vegetation of the shores and mountainside to gain a full appreciation of the magic of this area.

Key Attractions of Cradle Mountain National Park:

Perhaps the most distinctive flora of the area are the pandani and the fagus – the former for its paradoxical palm-like appearance, the latter for its status as Australia’s only deciduous tree. Fagus, also know as deciduous beech (Nothofagus gunnii), is endemic to Tasmania and has a magnificent autumn display, ranging through gold to deep red from late April to May.

Stroll from cascading rivers to dense, old-growth rainforest in just 20 minutes on the Enchanted Walk, or take most of the day to tackle the summit.

The history of the  Weindorfers devotion to Cradle Mountain and their successful efforts to ensure its preservation as a national park is told in Weindorfer’s Chalet, just off the road to Dove Lake.

If you have your heart set on the Overland Track, you don’t have to do it all yourself. Guided walks are available, some staying in catered huts along the way. (See   Cradle Huts).  

If you are interested in the natural history of the park, you’ll enjoy the displays and interpretation at the Visitor Centre, which you pass as you travel towards Dove Lake.

Cradle Mountain Accommodation:

Dotted along the   Overland Track  are huts and camp sites  . You must  book if you plan to walk the Overland Track between 1 November and 30 April.

At Waldheim, which is situated beside lush rainforest, you can stay in simple    cabins equipped with basic cooking utensils, a gas stove and heating. The amenities block has showers and flushing toilets.

Just outside the park you’ll find more accommodation to suit most budgets, from luxurious highland chalets to powered and unpowered camp sites.

What is near Cradle Mountain National Park:

A range of tours are offered from Cradle Valley, just outside the park boundary, including      horseback trail rides, and   helicopter flights over the region’s rugged mountains.

How to Get to Cradle Mountain National Park:

The northern end of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) south of Burnie, a 90-minute drive via the B18, the A10 and the C132.

The park is also 90 minutes from Devonport – take the B19 and the B14 south to Sheffield, then the C141 to AAA Granary beside Tasmazia,then C136, and the C132 to the park entrance. The park is a 2.5-hour drive from Launceston via the Bass Highway (A1) and the signposted route along the B13 and the C156 through Sheffield.

A  shuttle bus  service   operates from the information centre at the old airstrip most times of the year.

A world class wildlife conservation facility at Tasmania's premier wilderness destination - Cradle Mountain.

Devils @ Cradle is a unique Tasmanian conservation facility focusing on Tasmania's three carnivorous marsupials, whilst concentrating primarily on the Tasmanian devil but including both the Eastern and Spotted - tail Quoll.

The sanctuary is located adjacent to the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain National Park.

The tourism side of the business allows visitors to view these animals from the comfort of the Visitors Centre or wander through the sanctuary on a personalised guided tour which ensures a close up encounter with a Tasmanian devil. The Mole Creek Karst National Park was declared in 1996 to provide protection for some of the finest and most visited cave systems in the State, including Marakoopa and King Solomons Cave. Both caves are open to the public, and provide the opportunity to take a deeper look into the fascinating world of 'karst' landscapes.

The Mole Creek area is renowned for its caves. Marakoopa and King Solomons Caves are but two caves in an area that contains over 300 known caves and sinkholes. Other typical karst features in this area include gorges and large underground streams and springs.

Both caves are home to a range of fascinating animals which have evolved features which allow them to adapt to their lightless environments. The glow-worm display in Marakoopa Cave is the largest you'll see in any public access cave anywhere in Australia. For the visitor, the Mole Creek Karst National Park offers a range of activities. Although guided tours of the caves will be high on your agenda, don't miss the opportunity to take a short walk through the beautiful forests in which these caves occur.

LOCATION:Mole Creek Karst National Park is situated in the central north of Tasmania, about 40 minutes drive west of Deloraine. It can reached via the B12 from Deloraine via Mole Creek. The first turnoff is well sign-posted and leads to Marakoopa Cave. The second turnoff is a further 7 km along the B12 and leads to King Solomons Cave. If you plan to visit both caves, remember that it will take about 15 minutes to travel the distance between the two.

There are no camping facilities in the park. Film, postcards and souvenirs are available at the caves. Petrol, accommodation and other supplies are available nearby at Mole Creek and Sheffield.

Day visitor facilities

Both caves have toilets, water and picnic shelters. Wood and electric barbeques are available.

A public telephone is located at King Solomons Cave.

Guided Cave Tours

Marakoopa and King Solomons Cave are both open to the public. Both are spectacular and differ greatly in their features.

Marakoopa Cave

Marakoopa Cave features two underground streams, a large display of glow-worms, large caverns, rim pools, reflections and shawl and flowstone features. "Marakoopa" is a Tasmanian Aboriginal word meaning handsome. After taking a tour of the cave you will understand why it is so named.

Tours are approximately 45 minutes in duration. There are two unique tours in Marakoopa Cave:

Underground Rivers and Glow-worms

Visit the lower chamber to be dazzled by sparkling crystals and reflective pools of stalactites. Take time to listen to the music of underground creeks and soak up the silence of abandoned river passages. This easy tour caters for all age groups and levels of fitness.

Cathedral, Gardens and Glow-worms

The magnificent cavern known as the 'Great Cathedral' is a highlight not to be missed. The 'Gardens' feature delicate formations and beautiful colours. Medium fitness levels are required to ascend the stairway to the 'Great Cathedral'.

King Solomons Cave

King Solomons Cave is jam packed with features and lavishly decorated with shawls, stalactites and stalagmites. Tours are approximately 45 minutes in duration and cater for all age groups and levels of fitness.

Tickets for King Solomons Cave are still available at the King Solomons Cave guide office but only if paying with eftpos visa card or master card. There is no cash held on the premises at King Solomons Cave Guide Office.

The Don River Railway is the North West Coast's Premier Tourist Attraction and one of Australia's finest heritage passenger carrying railways.

Located 5 minutes from Devonport, Tasmania.

The railway is open every day (except Christmas Day and Good Friday) from 9am to 5pm.

Our focus

The focus is in providing visitors with a personalised, friendly and informative experience. The Seahorse World experience includes:

• The Cave of the Seahorse – an exhibit of various types of Seahorses.

• A high-tech working seahorse farm, demonstrating from birth to adulthood thousands of pot-bellied seahorses.

• The Southern Ocean Aquarium features various bizarre marine species of the wild southern seas including weedy seadragons, sharks, giant cuttlefish, a Tasmanian Giant Crab and a touch pool for the kids.

Seahorse World grew out of research work initiated at the University of Tasmania in the 1990’s looking into the life cycle of the Pot Bellied Seahorse that is native to Tasmania.

From this, a commercial breeding project, Seahorse Australia, began in 1998 and from its earliest days attracted visitor interest. In 1999 a feasibility study was conducted to explore a tourism venture alongside the breeding project

Since 1999, Seahorse World has been a significant regional attraction for northern Tasmania attracting over half a million visitors and employing up to 14 local staff. Seahorse World is a wonderful illustration of both business and environmental achievement.

In 2010, Seahorse World was purchased by Craig and Rachelle Hawkins. Rachelle was the Senior Biologist at the commencement of the project. Seahorse Australia is the parent company of Seahorse World.

Opening hours.

Seahorse World is open 7 days a week year round (the only exception is we are closed Christmas Day).

During December to April tours depart regularly from 9.30am – 4. 00pm (4.30pm in peak times or if booked).

During May to November  tours depart on the hour from 10.00am to 3.00pm (4pm tours may be conducted if booked in advance).

The guided tour takes around 45 minutes, please plan to allow at least an hour at Seahorse World.

Canyoning is the most exciting way to experience the World Heritage Area at Cradle Mountain.

We specialise in half and full day tours, taking our guests to places only accessible by canyoning and giving them a unique insight to Tasmania’s wilderness.

• Wilderness + adrenalin + adventure = the Dove Canyon. If you are after an unforgettable experience in Tasmania, you have come to the right place. The Dove Canyon showcases wild Tasmania at its best. This trip involves a thrilling combination of jumps, slides and abseils buried in a 50 metre deep quartzite canyon. Definitely one to write home about.

This option is for the adventurous and intrepid. You do not need any previous canyoning or abseiling experience, but we recommend customers are physically fit, MUST be able to swim and have a great sense of adventure.

The minimum age for participants on this tour is 15.

We also provide a tasty lunch on this tour.

Difficulty

Physically and mentally challenging. There's no way to walk around any of the falls, so it is a committing trip. Plus a very steep hill to walk out at the end.

Tours

“Speeler Plain”
We pick you up from your Cradle Mountain accommodation and travel to our base just outside the Cradle Mountain World Heritage Area.

An introduction and safety briefing on the Quad Bike prior to climbing to the top of the “Speeler Plain.”

Our track winds up through ancient myrtle forest and alpine eucalypt forest to the button grass plains at the top of the “Speeler.”

The spectacular views of Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff, Mount Roland, Western Bluff and Black Bluff are amazing (and you didn’t even have to walk!)

If the cloud is down then we just have to enjoy the solitude before we head off down the dirt (mostly mud) for a play before “boiling the billy” and ultimately heading back to base.

Tour times will vary with the season.
Tour time including transfers is approximately 2.5hrs.
